Volunteer Story: Unity, Collaboration and Professionalism

“We are the first group of GDUFS students to meet the UN agency representatives upon their arrival in Guangzhou. That’s a true honor and responsibility to represent our university.” Before the event began, the airport reception team was well-prepared. Volunteers had visited the airport and the high-speed rail station in advance to familiarize themselves with the routes and rehearsed possible scenarios for receiving the guests. When representatives arrived, the volunteers held welcome signs high with warm smiles, quickly confirmed their identities, and guided them to the shuttle buses. With a lively and orderly atmosphere on site, the airport reception task was accomplished smoothly and efficiently. “Please sign up at the registration,” said the volunteers. Upon arriving at the hotel, volunteers promptly guided guests through registration and distributed materials in order. Throughout the process, the students remained composed and professional, demonstrating strong cross-cultural communication skills.

Volunteers of the venue operations team worked in close coordination with clear division of tasks. The guiding team arrived early to direct guests orderly into the venue, where conference materials and nameplates were neatly arranged and fully prepared. The protocol team worked seamlessly with the backstage coordination team to ensure a smooth flow for speakers going on and off the stage. Tasks such as equipment testing, order maintenance, and logistical support were carried out in a well-organized, interlocking manner. This precise and efficient collaboration reflected SIGI’s long-term emphasis on cultivating students’ practical competencies, contributing significantly to the success of the opening ceremony.

During the university exchange session held at the library, the venue had been fully set up. Volunteers guided guests to their seats and assisted faculties from other universities in engaging with international organization representatives. They provided timely and attentive interpretation, refreshments and assistance to ensure smooth communication. The atmosphere was warm and engaging. Some volunteers stood attentively by tables, listening closely to guests’ needs, while others moved through the crowd, offering help proactively. Through their professionalism and dedication, they translated SIGI’s educational philosophy of “dedication and responsibility” into tangible action, safeguarding the success of the exchange.

After the Job Fair, the volunteer team continued their professional service by accompanying representatives of international organizations on visits to GAC Aion, GAC Group, and Yongqing Fang, a vibrant Lingnan cultural district. These excursions offered the guests a firsthand understanding of China’s industrial innovation and the charm of Lingnan culture. Throughout the visits, the students demonstrated their commitment as youthful envoys of cultural exchange through high-quality service.

School Vision: Learning Through Practice, Cultivating Talent Through the “Five-in-One” Cultivation Model

From global governance theory in the classroom to professional service in practice and from a preliminary understanding of international organizations to in-depth dialogue with their representatives, this volunteer experience planted the seeds of contributing to international affairs with youthful energy in the students’ hearts. It proclaimed to all youth that a career with international organizations is not distant dreams, but attainable stages through practical experiences. The responsibility of the young generation lies not only in mastering their expertise and honing their skills, but also in proactively broadening their horizons and integrating personal growth into national development and the broader trend of building the community with a shared future for mankind.

SIGI has adhered to its innovative “Five-in-One” talent cultivation model, dedicated to cultivating interdisciplinary talent with national responsibility, global perspective, and professional competence. In an era of profound transformation in the global governance system where the role of international organizations is increasingly vital, nurturing young talent with international competitiveness and a strong sense of responsibility has become an urgent mission entrusted by the times.

Our School recognizes that theoretical instruction alone is insufficient to cultivate well-rounded, high-level professionals. Therefore, while systematically teaching international governance theory, SIGI actively builds diverse practical platforms to help students strengthen their abilities through hands-on experiences. The volunteer service at the 6th UN Job Fair is a vivid example of this educational philosophy. Through systematic training, including preliminary preparations, simulation exercises, and cross-cultural communication training, students comprehensively improved their teamwork and intercultural communication skills. During the event, they interacted closely with international organization representatives as volunteers and won recognition and praise with their solid expertise, enthusiastic services and outstanding communication skills. Drawing motivation from this volunteer experience, the students will further solidify their professional foundations, engage in professional practice, and refine their comprehensive capabilities in future academic and professional endeavors.

Moving forward, SIGI will align with the national strategy for modernizing education and building a strong education system. It will uphold the GDUFS motto of “Virtue and Action, Global Vision” and remain committed to its mission to cultivate interdisciplinary talent equipped with both national responsibility and global vision.  Guided by “Five-in-One” talent cultivation model, students will be empowered to shine as young professionals with ideals, capabilities, and a sense of responsibility in global governance, contributing their wisdom and strength to building the community with a shared future for mankind.
